Unveiling The 5 Most Dangerous Cities In Canada 2023

The crime rate in Canada is trifling. Although Canada is a relatively safe place, there are some of the most dangerous cities in the world to stay away from.

Canada uses the CSI (Crime Severity Index) to measure crimes reported by police. The CSI offers a more functional, severity-weighted statistic. The national CSI has stabilized in recent years, going from 73.9 in 2020 to 73.1 in 2021.

That figure came after a 7% decline in CSI from 2019 to 2020. In other words, Canada is getting safer, but only in some of its cities.

If you are considering moving to Canada, stay away from these dangerous cities in Canada.

The 5 Most Dangerous Cities in Canada

Quebec is the safest province in Canada, with an overall CSI of 54.3, followed by Ontario. However, crime rates are even higher outside of these two metropolitan provinces. The most dangerous area in Canada is the Northwest Territories, with a CSI rating of 391.2.

As for the most populated provinces, there are cities with high crime rates in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Here, we dive into some of the most dangerous cities in the world.

  1. Red Deer, AB

Red Deer is one of the most dangerous cities in Alberta. Located midway along the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, your local museum has a substantial First Nations art and artifacts collection.

Red Deer has crime rate of 176.4. The violent crime count is 175.7, while the non-violent crime count is 176.2. That’s many points above the Alberta average.

  1. Lethbridge, AB

As of 2019, Lethbridge was the fourth largest city in Alberta, with a population greater than 100,000. Being close to the Canadian Rockies, it has warm summers and mild winters. The mild climate has attracted many residents.

Despite the pleasant weather, Lethbridge has an overall CSI of 148.9. The violent crime rate is 133.8, and the non-violent crime rate is 154.0. That’s above Alberta’s CSI of 101.36.

  1. Regina, SK

Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan and the second-largest city. It has a strong arts and cultural scene and commercial hub for southern Saskatchewan. However, due to its status as one of the largest cities in the province, there is a significant crime rate.

Regina’s CSI is 116.8. The violent crime rate stands at 150.9. The non-violent crime measure is only 104.3. Still, the overall CSI is below the Saskatchewan average of 146.7.

  1. Surrey, British Columbia

Surrey is a city in the Vancouver metropolitan area, located south of the Fraser River on the border between the United States and Canada. Peace Arch Provincial Park is here; a white arch marks the boundary. Unfortunately, despite this appeal, Surrey has a high crime rate.

The overall crime rate is 70.8, still below British Columbia’s average of 92.8. In Surrey, there was great concern about drug use and drug-related crime.

  1. Edmonton, AB

Edmonton, Alberta, is located on the North Saskatchewan River. It is the profit-making city. Regrettably, Edmonton has a crime problem.

Edmonton’s CSI is 106.2, with a violent crime score of 123.8 and a non-violent crime score of 99.6. While these levels remain high, CSI’s rating has declined in recent years, meaning the city’s police department may be stepping up to address the problem.
